Time-effective discussions with your clients about their estate planning

We have been talking to advisers and clients. Although it seems counterintuitive, estate planning comes up in conversation during this time of the year more often as people have more head space and time and are trying to tick off last-minute goals from the beginning of the year.

The statistics from the Bureau of Statistics are also stark but unmistakable: There are approximately 161,000 deaths in Australia each year ( 441 per day) and seasonally, about 397 deaths occur each day during the summer months of December through to February, the death rate in Australia registered at 31 October last was 17% more than the historical average, and by all accounts, sudden death rates caused primarily by cardiac arrest and coronary artery disease are on the increase.

These morbid statistics highlight the importance of your client’s estate planning affairs being properly in order, particularly during extended breaks.

However, the dilemma for advisers is how to present this reality of estate planning to clients and the time commitment required to undertake a proper estate planning review, particularly with clients with more complex affairs leading up to the Christmas break.
